94th DCAT Annual Dinner Speaker: Matthew McConaughey
Actor, Producer and Minister of Culture
Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey is an actor, professor, Minister of Culture/M.O.C. and philanthropist who has enjoyed a diverse career in film and television, from starring in roles to teaching aspiring film students.
McConaughey first gained notice for his supporting performance in the coming-of-age comedy Dazed and Confused, and has since appeared in more than 50 movies, including A Time to Kill, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Wolf of Wall Street, Interstellar and Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for his lead acting role. He has also produced and starred in HBO’s award-winning drama True Detective, a performance that garnered him two Emmy nominations.
In 2019, McConaughey added “college professor” to his list of accomplishments when he was appointed a professor of practice in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at his alma mater, the University of Texas-Austin. Since 2015, McConaughey has served as a visiting instructor co-teaching a film production course that he developed.
In addition to his artistic talents, McConaughey also works to better the lives of young students through the just keep livin Foundation. Co-founded by McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves, the foundation provides students with tools to lead active lives and make healthy choices for a better future. The foundation currently serves more than 2,500 students at 37 after-school fitness and wellness programs located in California, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Washington D.C.
Through his work as the creative director of Wild Turkey bourbon, he has collaborated on the company’s "With Thanks" annual charitable giving campaign. This year’s campaign teamed up with Operation BBQ Relief, which prepares meals for first responders. He is also the co-creator of his own bourbon, Longbranch.
McConaughey is also involved in Austin, Texas athletics and culture. He is a co- owner of the first Austin football club, Austin FC. In addition, he serves as Minister of Culture/M.O.C. for the new Moody Center entertainment and sports arena which will open in 2022 in Austin.
